In terms of height, a full 20 centimetres separate Dominika Cibulkova and Kaia Kanepi.

But only 10 places stand between the pair in the WTA rankings, with Kanepi currently the world number 17 and Cibulkova ranked 27th. With Kim Clijsters having been confirmed as the new world number one just moments earlier, the two players started the match in determined fashion. Just three games in, though, Kanepi called her physio onto the court after feeling a pain in her left leg. As Kanepi left the court for treatment, Cibulkova may have believed that she had a semi-final clash with Clijsters in the bag.
However, Kanepi returned and appeared to be suffering no ill effects as she soon broke the diminutive Slovakian's serve to lead 4-2. True to her reputation, Cibulkova showed excellent aggression and mobility as she set about getting back in the game. Kanepi, though, is not a top-20 player for nothing and her solid defence forced her opponent into taking risks. Cibulkova hit some of the best winners in the first set, but she was also guilty of the most mistakes.

Estonian Kanepi, seeded third for the tournament, took the first set 6-2 after 40 minutes of play. But she hadn't seen the last of Cibulkova. The Slovakian broke Kanepi's first service game thanks to some hard hitting and some marvellous forehand strokes. Cibulkova snatched the second set 6-2 and seemed to have found her rhythm. Having already made it to the quarter finals in Sydney and Brisbane this year, Cibulkova seemed determined to reach the semi final stage for the first time this season. However, she found that there lies a steely efficiency behind Kanepi's outwardly calm exterior.
Kanepi broke at 2-1 and held her own serve to put herself in the box-seat. She continued to serve solidly and broke Cibulkova's serve once again with the score at 5-2. After one hour and 54 minutes of play, Kanepi finally sealed a 6-2 2-6 6-2 victory and booked a meeting with Kim Clijsters for the third time in her career. "I've got nothing to lose against her", she declared shortly after the match.
