Review on LOVE
Upon knowing that Vicki Zhao
would be cast in the film LOVE, I'd have
been exhilarated, thrilled and too much longin' for the open of the film
in the cinema. I've been keepin' my eye on the shootin’ and
the process of the postproduction of this work the same as most Vicki
fans over the previous months. I even paid my attention to the titbits and
juicy details on every member of this crew. I’ve gleaned a multitude of stills,
posters and trailers of it. Once the first trailer got released, I’ve been
attracted by the fresh frames and some interesting lines of this film,
appreciating the trailers over and over again in front of my laptop as if I had
been glued to it. I was just like a crazy man, snapped the posters of this film
wherever they were hung.

After nearly 5-month wait and
concerns, I, as well as a group of fans from Henan Vicki fans club, excited and
a little bit, somehow, anxious, stepped in the cinema on
the first open day of LOVE(Feb. 13th) in Zhengzhou big Shanghai city（a
shoppin’ mall）. This is the return work of Vicki Zhao
after she delivered her baby girl on Apirl 11th, 2010, in Singapore.
She really has a fabulous, flawless, fascinatin’, impressive, humorous,
gorgeous and virtually hilarious performance in this film. She plays a single
mom,named Jin Xiaoye, living with a 7-year-old cute and smart son in this film.
Xiaoye is a local Beijinger who has manchurian descent(royal family in Qing
Danasty), living by selling the traditional Chinese courtyard for an agency.
Vicki needs to speak standard Beijing dialect throughout the film, and she has
to perform pole dance to meet the demand of the story, which both are great
chanllenges for her. Although not very excel in the pronunciation of Beijing
dialect, she performs really well and accurately,especially in terms of the
demonstration of the inner loneliness of the single mom, the maternal love to
her still childish son, the desire and urge to be loved and the sharp contrast
between internal weakness and external openness and carelessness. Vicki，actually gets a successful crossover through this role,’cause there was
always a stereotype of Vicki in the mind of the mass---she is a comic and used
to play some, to some extent, superficial roles in the past. Through this film,
she can ultimately prove that she is not only a good comic, but a superb and
eminent actress as well. Let me hasten to add that some segements of this film and
the loveliness of the role of Xiaoye still help people recall and recapture the
Taiwanese soap opera Pearl Princess,which
was a huge sensation in the entertainment world at the turn of this century and
hereby Vicki Zhao became a cult figure in greater China;some parts of her performance in this film really makes the
audience rock with laughter. As a word, Vicki Zhao lives up to her beloved fans
and the film audiences. To me, I just
can’t love this role more. Vicki Zhao is a genuinely Chinese Julia
Roberts.

As for this film, it revolves from three
different love stories among 8 characters in their twenties,thirties and even fifties
happening in Taipei and Beijing. The footage of this film is fluent and the
picture of it is brilliant and beautiful. The casts are all big names in Aisa.
Every leadin’ role of this film is a vision of beauty. Hsu Chi is still sexy
and perceptual as she used to be in other films. her more and more matured
acting skill and natural charms make her notably outstandin’ and sparklin’.She
is, without any doubt, an Asian film sweetheart.
Some critic says it is a chick flick, ‘cause
the three leadin’ actors in it are literal
heartthrobs. Ethan
Ruan, Mark Chao(Jau) and Eddie Peng Yu Yan all show their well built bodies and handsome
appearances in this film, even the director Doze Chenzer Niu appears in this film with his upper
body naked. To be honest, I really appreciate the
performance of Ethan Ruan in this film. In this film, he is a pure guy who
stammers. He really lives the part,and his perfromance makes me truly believe
that he is that guy. By this movie, Ethan can summon his gut and poise,and
confidently say I am one of the best
actors in Taiwan nowadays ,there is
absolute no such back-door dealings in the 47th Taiwan Golden Horse
Award, and I match for the honor of
best actor. Mark Chao(Jau), he is a born actor. He plays a libertine who
grows up with his single rich mom in this film. He and Vicki Zhao in this film
are a perfect match. They quarral, fight and finally they fall in love with
each other. What makes many fans yell and scream is that Mark kisses Jin Xiaoye
altogether three times in this film. At first, I didn’t understand why Mark
would fall in love with Jin Xiaoye; they have totally different family
backgrounds and life stories.Under normal circumstances,they’re two parallels
without any intersection. However, I began to have a sympathy for Mark
unconsciously. As a single-parent child as well, I gradully understand that
Mark is a virtually playboy foolin’ around all day,but deep in his heart, he is
as lonely as Jin Xiaoye. As a man, altough he has a mother, it seems to have a
gap and distance between his rich mom and him; they sit at the both ends of the
table to have dinner and chat politely. He desires paternal affection; he
desires the sweetness and happiness of the family, which can obtained from Jin
Xiaoye and her cute son Doudou. Amber Kuo and Ivy Yihan Chen are just
like girls next door. They are young, fresh, energetic, exuberant, simple and
pure in LOVE.I really touched by the
triangular love among Amber, Ivy and Eddie. Amber’s love to Eddie is deep; she
is an affluent sencond generation in this film; she is proud but at the same
time full of sympathy and mercy; she is a kittle cattle, yet she would rather
kill herself rather than her boyfriend in her nightmare even after being cheated
by him. I am also moved by the staunch friendship between her and Ivy. Amber is
initially afraid of being dumped by her boyfriend, but later she can let him go
after knowing that her best friend Ivy has a crash on Eddie and gets
pregant,and in order to maintain their friendship and support Eddie’s dream, even
attemps to get an abortion.What a pure love! what an incredible and subtle
friendship!

I really enjoy the atmosphere of Ethan
Ruan’s nuclear family. The love between mom and dad, the love between elder
brother and younger sister; the love of parents towards their children are all
tremendously revealed in this film. Although Ethan’s mom always complains about
her husband and swears that she would split with him, she loves her husband so
much and divorce with him is just a pet phrase,a trick and a leverage.
Some of the lines in the film are
impressive as well. Such as“can you feel our holding gives us a sense of coming back home.” “I love
your smell; it’s like the fregrance of the grassland under the shinning sun”; “There
is always a broken heart inside every bastard”. “I don’t accept support; I do
accept love only”The by far most emotional lines are said out by Lu Ping(the
director Doze Chenzer Niu ornaments )in this film. He said to Rou Yi（Hsu Chi ornaments）, “I ,to some extent ,love the guy you are fallin’ in love with, just
because you love him”. Besides,the cinematography and original
music are all unbelievable.
To my regret, on account of time limit,
cutting too many parts of the role Xiao Ye played by Vicki Zhao causes some gaps
and defects in the story between Vicki and Mark. Apart from that, some faults
of the script also needs to get attention by the production crew.
LOVE premieres
on the day before Valentine’s Day in 2012; After openning in the cinema for
almost a week in mainland China, it has got a gross 100million in the box
office. It is really a hit nowadays and breaking the cinematic record of
Chinese film. Most importantly, I really enjoy this film and savor the moment in cinema~
