Book Report on Oliver Twist
Oliver Twist is a famous novel by Charles Dickens. As we all know, Dickens was one of the greatest British novelist in the 19th century. He was born in a poor family, and was forced to work in a factory in his early age. Although he got little formal education from the school, with great effort of self study and talent, he eventually became a representative of English critical realism.
The story is set in the 19th century in London. At that time, with the British industry revolution proceeding, in order to get the most profit, the industry bourgeoisie oppressed workers by lengthening working time, improving working intensity, even employing children and women for low salary. The low class people suffered a lot and the conflict between the industry bourgeoisie and the working class became sharper and sharper.
The novel is a story about Oliver Twist, an orphan, who is born in workhouse and is treated cruelly. His life begins with pain that makes him timid and weakness. In a world full of poverty and crime, he has a number of rich experiences. He meets many different people, some of them are kind but some of them are bad. Every day in his life, he suffers from starvation, beating and abuse. He has a very tragic life, but fortunately he doesn’t lose his kindness. Finally, justice defeats evil. Those bad people receive punishment which they deserve, and Oliver is adopted by a kind family. Of course, he lives a happy life in the end.
When I read the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I am shocked by not only his sufferings but also the darkness of the society. In my opinion, author’s intention to model the character like Oliver was to reflect darkness and violence which were hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. Oliver stands for the homeless children at that time. All they wanted was just a simple life which had a warm place to sleep, and some food to eat. However, the decayed social environment couldn’t satisfy their little wish. Britain developed fast at that time but low class people even could not survive. How ridiculous and satiric it was!
In the novel, Oliver, Nancy and Rose all come from suffering, but they yearn for the better life and this yearning support them, so they never give up and never lose themselves. In their heart, goodness is still alive no matter how dark the environment it is around them. Our readers can easily catch idea that justice and kindness will eventually defeat evil among words and between lines. I admire Oliver’s brave spirit, and believe in that we should keep ourselves clean and don’t let our heart which is kind by nature covered by evil dust no matter how many hardship in the darkness of the experience.

    How time flies! We finished our writing course with the end of this semester. Now, I am sitting by the table and begin to write my essay. My learning experience in this course is just staring flashback in my mind.

    For the language accumulation, I recited three passages this term: prayer for my mother, a letter from Obama to his daughters and . To be honest, I really enjoyed this part because I learnt not only some good expressions, sentence patterns and language style but also a very important writing idea -:to write beautiful essays with simple words. This has become one of my writing goals in the future.

    For the peer valuation, I helped my partners correct their mistakes, such as run-on sentence, spelling, tense. The process of helping others was the process of studying other’s advantages and reminding me not to make the same mistakes.

    For the presentation, I studied the textbook and found out the structure of the chapter in order to make my classmates get a better understanding of the chapter. I also searched some related materials to enrich my presentation.
    For the learning journal and free writings which were collected in my portfolio, I kept a good habit to write them regularly, never in delays. I hoped I could keep this continually.

      Nowadays English is one of the most important languages in the world because of its worldwide use. Influenced by geography, history and culture, English has been divided into many varieties. British English and American English are the two main varieties of them.
      According to the terminology of modern linguistics, American English (or U.S. English) is a variant of English. Its origin could date back to the 17th century when the English language was brought to North America by colonists from England. During several hundred years’ development, American English formed its own features.
      Features of American English
      1、Conservativeness
      American English came from English, so it has preserved certain old words and their meanings of English. For instance, the word progress in England was used as a verb only during 16th-17th century, but the same word and the same meaning has been used until now in America.
      Here are more expressions which were popular only in the past in England, but American English preserved these until now.
      I guess you are wrong. (I think you are wrong.)
      He was mad about losing the chance. (He was angry about losing the chance)
      2、Creativeness
      While American English still remains some ancient usages of words, the American people also have created a large numbers of new words and new meanings to the old words. All reflects the life and the social environment of the American people, indicates the American’s thinking style and values, and also shows the feature of American English: Creativeness.
      Here are some examples:
      Some new words were created for the development of technology: black hole(黑洞),Cinerama(全景电影),duplication(录像机),space walk(太空行走
      Some new words were created by the combination of the old words: Smog(烟雾)is the combination of smoke and fog. Medicare(医疗照顾)is the combination of medical and care. Brunch(早午餐)is the combination of breakfast and lunch.
      3、Diversified American English vocabulary
      As a nation of immigrants, the United States is regarded as “nation of nations” or “the melting pot”, so does the American English.

        Due to BrE and AmE developed independently with the different history, geography and culture. Of course, there are also many differences between them.

            Pronunciation of the stress on long sentences:
            British English tends to stress strongly one syllable, usually the first and hurries over the rest of the word. American English tends to put the stress on the first syllable but also to put a secondary stress on the latter syllable and pronounces the remaining syllables more distinctly.
            4、Differences in grammar
            ① Collective noun
            In British English, a collective noun normally governs a verb that is plural, whereas a singular verb usually is used in American English.(Algeo 2006:279-286)

            ②Preposition
            The preposition can sometimes be omitted. For instance, the British sometimes give clock time as “Half five” instead of “Half past five”. Similarly, the Americans say “The bus arrives a quarter past three”, whereas the British say “The bus arrives at quarter past three”. (Hargrave 2003:261-262)
            ③Verb
            British use “have got” to express the meaning of own while Americans use“have”.
            BrE: She has got an interesting book.
            AmE: She has an interesting book.
