最新《海德维格》观演后记
I went to Hedwig on June.5. Two GG14D actors came. Hokook(Ahn Se Ha) and Byungtae(Yeon Jae Wook) were sitting at G row. (There were one more guy and one girl, but I don't know who they were) Byungtae was today's Tommy. Hedwig stepped down to the audience seats shaking the beer can. It's about to explode, suddenly asked to Byungtae, "Tommy, did you feel good?" Byungtae answered loudly, "OK!" CSW and we all laughed. Hedwig gave him the beer can. At the car wash scene, we knew well about it, so we just enjoyed it. But Hogook seemed shocked by it, so cute. They all watched to the re-encore stage. From the encore stage, all stood up and jumped and cheered crazily. Hokook kept saying 'Wow' seeing people jumping and singing.
Personally I'm a fan of musical, watched many many musicals, but this was my first time to watch Cho Seung Woo's performance. That is his fault. Since I wasn't fan of specific actor, I never bought ticket at the opening time on the opening day. CSW's ticket was always being sold out. This time, I bought the ticket on the opening day. I watched Jekyll&Hyde 3 times, but haven't watched CSW's Jekyll yet. This is the reason why he should perform J&H this year.
Well, his performance was much better than I expected. I watched the movie Hedwig and was listening to the OST CD. So I was familiar to the story and the music. But CSW explained Hedwig's feeling and thoughts so kindly, and expressed inner feelings in detail. So I could understand, accept and sympathize Hedwig's life better. I was so moved by his acting. I cried then laughed, cried then laughed.Hedwig was performing at the small bar of Motel Riverview, singing and telling his life story. Tommy was having a big concert next to there. When the door was open, he could hear Tommy's singing 'Wicked little town' with different lyric ("Sorry, I was too young. You are so special, neither man nor woman"). Hedwig was so moved and healed by that one song. I cried a lot at that scene. Actually it was sung by CSW, but the way of singing is totally different, innocent and skill-less, in short hair, silver cross on his fore head, a perfect Tommy. But the next moment, he acted Hedwig again who was deeply touched by Tommy's singing, a womanly face expression, tearing full of emotion.
He did so many adlib performances, I can't remember all. He sang Rain - 'How to avoid sun.' And break dance, a windmill! He rotated on the floor wearing short dress
At encore stage, he sang three songs. And at the re-encore, CSW let us sing The origin of love and he & actress Lee Young Mi just sang the chorus. We all sang very well. All were memorizing the lyric. He was very touched, he looked so happy looking at us singing.He introduced actress LYM as "She is not my woman, but she is my soul mate. Have you ever seen such an sexy lady who is 40?" Yes! No, I've never seen. She danced hot sexy wave at encore stage better than Beyonce. And she played the keyboard very well.Ahn Se Ha was an actor actually. He is handsome in real life. Tall, good body and small face. On the way out, many people talked to him. One person told him about GG14D DVD. He answered he was expecting it too and would buy one. Another person informed him that if he joined the DVD cafe and pre-paid, he could get discount. He answered he would. Byungtae was phone calling to someone, he talked to the phone, "I came to Seung Woo hyung's performance."

While he was singing 'The origin of love', all the mic were turned off. He let the band stop playing the instruments, he stepped into the audience seat and sang without mic. He finished the song, kept instant dialog to the audience, and came to 2nd floor to the control box. After the audio is fixed, he sang this song once more. To the audience, this performance remained as a legend.
At the latest edition of magazine 'The Musical' (May/2014) CSW talked about this. He sweated a lot at the moment, but he believed the audio would be fixed soon, so he kept adlib performance. And he said this 2014 Hedwig is his last Hedwig.

It seems this is the only TV talk show CSW appeared in. He looked so awkward and nervous, spoke very very slowly, but his answers were straightforward, honest, cute and attractive.
At 99 seconds power interview, his answers are these. It looks funnier comparing to viewers poll.

... The beacon of this show is one and only: that is, Jo Seung Woo’s interpretation of Jo Seung Woo. No wonder Korean reporter said that “The real gift of ‘God’s Gift’ is to the happiness being together with Jo Seung Woo.” (In Korea, it is very expensive and difficult to see JSW up and close for his musical shows…therefore, JSW’s appearance on the small screen is a blessing for Korean audience!).
I cannot rave enough about JSW’s acting in this drama. He is not that tall and he is not your typical hot hunky Korean guy either. But he commendable and yet effortless acting makes him a formidable giant who carries the show. He simply lights up the screen and infuses the drama with so much energy, love and sincerity that one cannot help falling in love with such a wonderfully flawed character.
I’ve known JSW’s works for ten years. He is always a show stealer, even in Classic. But still, I am so grateful that this show put him on the radar of international audience. He is a natural born actor and indeed he is the precious gift this drama gives to the audience.
.... I have no doubt regarding Lee’s acting ability. However, it is interesting that once you pair LBY with Jo Seung Woo and Kim Tae Woo, you can see the difference. In particular, JSW’s acting has so many different shades and colors. Maybe that’s what critics identify as “style”? It’s not only about giving a truthful representation of the character. JSW gives the character a distinct flavor, a life form of its own that the audience can completely forget that it’s a drama and he is only performing. Otherwise, why would we detest this ending so much? We identify with DC and we want him to obtain happiness and peace after such a traumatic life.

Actor Jo Seung-woo will return to the musical industry after his TV appearance in the MBC drama, “Horse Healer,” which recently ended its run.
His return to musicals is garnering more public attention because he has decided to take the role he previously played in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.”
“Jo was eager to take part in [the musical] despite the surge of requests from [companies] that are hoping to work with him,” said Shownote, the agency organizing the musical.
The monologue style of rock musical was introduced in the United States in 1998 and was brought to Korea in 2005. Jo was the lead character, Hedwig the transgender, from 2006 to 2007. It has been said that Jo’s performance made the musical more popular in Korea.
Because of his performance, Jo also received casting calls from a variety of musical production companies afterward, boosting his status as a musical star.
Since then, he appeared in “Jekyll and Hyde” in 2011, “Zorro” in 2011, and in “Doctor Zhivago” last year.

Question: You have just watched the film for the first time. How do you feel?
Cho: I feel as if I just passed the finish line in a marathon. The film only took about three months to shoot. Everything went so fast. Now, having finished it, I feel really good. It's a touching story and a really good movie, not only because I am part of it (laughs).
Q: What's your favorite scene? Could you pick the most touching scene in the film?
Cho: I love every single scene. Watching the film is like taking out valuables from a treasure chest.
Q: The film is based on the true story of Bae Hyung-jin, who suffers from autism but was able to complete a full marathon. Did you get any help from Hyung-Jin while making the film?
Cho: Meeting Hyung-Jin and watching him talk and move definitely helped me a lot. It felt like going on an exploration. I watched him closely and studied his facial expressions, the way he walked and even the way he blinked his eyes. But I stopped visiting him once we started making the film because I wanted to be Cho-won and not Hyung-jin. I was afraid that I might just copy him.
Q: You had to run a lot in this film and you play an autistic character. What was the most difficult aspect of playing Cho-won?
Cho: The running wasn't that hard; I enjoyed it, actually. The difficult part was running during the cold winter while wearing just a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. My mouth got numb in the cold. But the hardest thing was that while playing Cho-won, I couldn't look at people directly. Autistic patients have difficulties in communicating and they lack social skills. So they don't look at other people carefully. At the end of the day, when I realized that I hadn't looked at someone's eyes the whole day, I felt lonely and sad.
Q: In the movie, Cho-won often plays with his fingers. Why is that?
Cho: I was also curious about that and asked Hyung-jin's mother. She told me that he plays with his fingers when he is excited, thrilled or nervous. But what made it even more interesting is that he also does it even when he isn't feeing those emotions.
Q: Your popularity has soared during the past year especially due to the musical "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." The tickets sold out very quickly and you received a standing ovation after every performance. Do you feel you are a big star?
Cho: Of course, I realize that I've become popular when more and more people recognize me in the streets and when the audience gets enthusiastic about my performance. But that doesn't necessary mean that I am a superstar. I just try my best at every moment.

When asked to have a round, Cho Seung-woo refused, saying "No, I am clean now." Yet he unveiled his tips after tinkering with a few "flower cards," Korean playing cards.
"Vets mark their own area. They fold cards they want to have in order to know which ones are the desired ones." While showing finger magic, he drops cards by mistake. "That's because here is not blanket," said Cho jokingly.
"It was really tough. Since I have never played Go Stop game, let alone gambled, I did not understand what "heukssari" was. Also, my hands were small so not perfect for normal flower cards. For the three months during the shot, I learned from real gambling veteran, but I still felt uncomfortable about bringing flower cards in my pocket."
Cho was the first one who came forward to choose the movie. He is the big fan of Choi Dong-hoon, director of "The Big Swindle," and he said he would be in the film when he heard Choi was planning to make cartoon Tazza of Heo Yeong-mahn into a film.
"At first, people said 'casting Cho is not right decision,' and I was very nervous. Yet when Heo said 'if you would just mimic the character in the cartoon, don't even try to make the movie,' I was encouraged to try. Instead of the original work, I grabbed the scenario and thought about a person who is freewheeling and full of guts, and cares about only himself."
Feel Unveiling a Secret Girlfriend-
"Movie Tazza is not about gambling but about people," said Cho. Goni, who happened to engage in Seota (a type of flower cards game) gambling rounds, he loses all he had including his sister's money she received when she got divorced. Goni flees his home. While dreaming about becoming the best gambler, he meets legendary gambler Pyeong (Baek Yoon-sik) and learn the secrets. He thinks he will quit gambling when he makes five times his sister’s money. However, he can not escape from femme fatale attraction of Madame Jung (Kim Hye-soo), gamble organizer, and strengthens the ties with Goh Gwang-ryeol (Yoo Hae-jin).
Charismatic Cho played charismatic role, which is like a fish in the water. When asked if he was a bad guy in high school, he said no without hesitation. Only being in mid-20s, he seems like an old man who knows my inner thoughts.
"I was precocious and I behaved like an adult because I wanted to be 30. I am the only male in my family so I thought myself as head of the family and wanted to earn money. But my friend once said to me that every man’s mental age is 14," he said to laughter.
Organizing flower cards at the end of the interview, Cho said "I am both nervous and pleased to see the release of the movie coming near." He explained he felt like showing his secret girlfriend to the public. Yet soon he stated bluntly "nothing to worry about and nothing to regret." His eyes seem overlapped with Goni's eyes.

[MUSICAL REVIEW]'Rent': All about Cho Seung-woo
The Korean version of the Broadway musical "Rent" opened for a two-month run early this week.
The show, originally composed by Jonathan Larson, is, however, boring and stuffy. There are too many characters - a total of 16 - all on a small stage at a Daehangno theater, shouting out their lines so quickly that you have no idea what they are really talking about.
The storyline was carelessly compiled and disordered, while the production team provided little scenic variation. There was also not enough space on stage to express the energy of youngsters living in New York.
Despite its negatives, however, the musical has been successful with young audiences screaming during and after the show due to Cho Seung-woo's explosive and passionate performance.
"I think I am quite enjoying performing in the musical," Cho Seung-woo says.
The show relied heavily on Cho's fame, highlighting his role throughout its two hour and 15 minute run. Simply the fact that Cho, a versatile actor and an iconic star of the country's entertainment industry, returned to the stage, was enough to drive audiences crazy.
Cho didn't disappoint his audiences, even revealing a little about himself through his portrayal of the most likable character he has ever taken on in his acting career.
Cho plays Roger, a musician desperate to write one great song before AIDS kills him.
The 27-year-old actor was charismatic and natural, as if he felt no pressures from acting.
"To be honest, I think I am quite enjoying performing in the musical," Cho said.
Cho has dominated local musical stages as a lead performer in "Jekyll and Hyde" and with his role as a transsexual rock singer in "Hedwig." He also won the Best Leading Actor award last year at the 10th annual Korea Musical Awards for "Jekyll."
Cho's casting in the musical set a new record late last year when tickets were sold out in less than half an hour. Cho appeared to have put a lot of effort into fully learning about his character in preparation for the show, rather than depending on his fame alone.
"I felt a lot of pressure ... it is really hard to express how overwhelmed I was by the news that tickets were sold out even before I started practicing my part and songs. So I went in the studio early (in the morning) and practiced really hard," said Cho.
"Rent" runs through March 4 at the Seensee Musical Theater in Daehangno, downtown Seoul. Tickets are 35,000 won and 40,000 won.

I was there. Since I'm a big fan of SJS, I went there to celebrate him. (That's why I have these video clips) I saw many other celebrities. CSW is one of them. I had watched his movies The Classic and Marathon at the theater and I knew he's performing Jekyll&Hyde, so I knew him well. He was so lovey dovey with his gf for the whole awards time. At that time I thought he was a little bit immature.
