step 2：辨连词
　　此处连词指的是连接句子的连词，有并列连词(and, but, however, or等)及从属连词(what, that, which, who, whom, when(ever), where(ever), why, if, because, so, as, for, no matter how/where/when/why/what( how-/where-/when-/what-ever), so...that等)。由并列连词连接的句子为并列句，由从属连词连接的句子为主从复合句;
　　辨析连词之后，在连词处将句子拆分开来。
　　主句：I shall define him as an individual
　　从句：who has elected as his primary duty and pleasure in life the activity of thinking

step 3：定主干
　　确定各分句的主干及修饰性成分。以谓语动词为中心，前后开枝散叶。前为主语，后为宾语(表语)
　　该句中一个难点为：宾语后置。宾语后置就是在动词和它的宾语之间加入较长的其他的成分，使得宾语出现在后面的一种情况，是保持句子平衡的一种方式。从句中，elect为及物动词，因此has elected的宾语应为名词性质，所以不肯能为as his primary duty and pleasure in life这样的一个介词短语结构，所以the activity of thinking为其后置了的宾语。
