Coleen McMahon has always been a dear friend, to me and to Tom, so I was honored when she graciously allowed me to use her song, "Beautiful Boy," in my YouTube video and in#BRIDEGROOM. This song is immensely special to me, for numerous reasons, but most importantly I think it is a song that reminds us about the fragility of life, and how we should cherish each moment with our loved ones. Coleen has released a music video for "Beautiful Boy," and I am proud to share it with you. Visit YouTube.com/ColeenMcMahon to view the video.#ColeenMcMahon #BeautifulBoy #BridegroomMovie
I had the honor of visiting The Trevor Project's headquarters in Los Angeles yesterday, and was deeply moved by the hard work its volunteers and employees are doing. Every week, I hear from a few hundred people who feel bullied, suicidal, or lonely. Most of these people have no solid support system, which is why #TheTrevorProject is such an essential organization. It literally saves lives every day by providing 24-7 comfort and assistance to those in need. I know first-hand what it is like to want to give up, and wish I had known about this organization when I was a teenager. Please, spread the word about The Trevor Project, and more importantly, use The Trevor Project if you are suffering in any way. You are worth more than you know. You deserve happiness. And you are loved, whether you realize it or not. If you need support, call the Trevor Lifeline (866)488-7386 or visit TheTrevorProject.org. #LoveIsLouder #ItGetsBetter
Thank you all for making #Bridegroom a top-rated documentary on #Netflix as well as the 4th most popular documentary released in 2013 on IMDB.com. I am tremendously grateful to all of you for getting the word out about our film. I truly consider this to be your film as well. With your help, and the power of social media, we are reaching people in unimaginable ways. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. #BridegroomMovie #TapTapTap
BREAKING: Hawaii to become the 16th state to legalize marriage equality! #LoveIsLouder #EqualLoveEqualRights #Aloha #RainbowState Lawmakers in the Hawaii state House of Representatives have approved a bill that would make Hawaii the 16th U.S. state to allow the freedom to marry. The amended bill, approved by a vote of 30-19, now returns to the state Senate for a concurrence vote, which is expected to easily pass before heading to Gov. Neil Abercrombie. The state Senate previously approved its version of the bill on October 30.
I am thrilled to announce that Bridegroom has partnered with Love Is Louder, a wonderful organization started by The Jed Foundation, and my friends Brittany Snow and Courtney Knowles. Love Is Louder was created to support anyone feeling mistreated, misunderstood or alone. It has grown into a movement of people from around the world who have come together to raise the volume around the message that love and support are louder than any internal or external voice that brings us down. Whatever the obstacles are that seem to keep us from pursuing our dreams and passions…we can overcome them. Take a second to post or tweet a statement that acknowledges that love is louder than those obstacles and hashtag it with #LoveIsLouder and #Bridegroom. For example – “#LoveIsLouder than fear of failure. #Bridegroom” or “#LoveIsLouder than what other people think of us. #Bridegroom”. I encourage you to support this organization and help us spread Bridegroom's message by visiting: LoveIsLouder.com/Bridegroom Photo taken by: Facebook.com/ScottDavisPhotography528 / @scottdavis528 #BridegroomMovie @brittsnowhuh @courtknows
Happy Veterans Day. November is a month to be thankful. Today I am especially grateful to the brave men and women who have fought to keep our country free. Special thanks to the LGBTQ vets who served in spite of adversity and discrimination, and who have been instrumental in making the United States military more tolerant. #VeteransDay
Throughout the next few weeks I'll be traveling. A lot. :) As you can tell by the photo I took of Justin this morning, he's not too thrilled. I'm currently on my way to NYC to speak on my very first panel. We will discuss the LGBTQ movement and how the Internet, particularly videos, can be used as a tool for social change. Out In Tech is partnering with Time Inc. to host the event. On November 14, I'll be in Washington, D.C. for a screening of BRIDEGROOM at the Human Rights Campaign's National Headquarters. On November 23, 24, & 25, I'll be in Kalispell and Missoula, Montana to attend screenings of BRIDEGROOM. More info coming soon. Finally, I'll be in Dallas, Texas for three screenings of BRIDEGROOM on November 28 & 29, and December 1 as part of the Dallas Comic and Pop Expo. For information on these screenings, visit http://thetexastheatre.com/movies-events/bridegroom #Bridegroom #BridegroomMovie #DayInLGBT
I'm honored to have been on the #OutInTech panel last night in NYC. We had inspiring conversations about the LGBT movement and how internet video just may be the most effective medium for creating social change. One of the most important takeaways for me was: when creating your own video content, always be genuine, honest and share your truth – don't worry about it failing or not going "viral" with thousands of views. This may sound cliche, but if a video you make helps one person open their heart or mind – it was worth it. You don't have to be an expert to make videos, you just have to stay true to who you are. By doing so, you can help people in ways you never thought possible. The attention surrounding my original YouTube video "It Could Happen To You" led to me putting so much pressure on myself and because I had this new unexpected platform; I felt pressure to be an LGBT expert, to sound intelligent in interviews, and to effectively be a voice for other people. Eventually I realized that all the pressure and unrealistic expectations was unhealthy – it held me back from my personal growth. I discovered that I didn't need to be who people expected or wanted me to be, I just had to be me. I'm not a professional speaker, I say "like" and "um" a lot and by no means am I an expert on the LGBT movement – and that's OK. I never ever could've imagined that people would listen to anything I have to say, I'm just an average guy who shared my experience...and this happened. So I urge you to do the same. It's our own voices and personal stories that will make a difference, so please, share yours. And if you're in the NYC tech scene, you'll want to join this OutInTech.com community. It's energizing and really worth being a part of.
Ordered a drink at #Starbucks, went to pay & the barista informed me that a gentleman had already paid for me. Made my day and inspired me to do the same. :) #PayItForward
The day is here! BRIDEGROOM is now available on iTunes, Amazon, and VirgilFilmsEnt.com. I'm honored to be able to share this film with you all, especially those of you who haven't yet been able to watch it on Netflix or OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. Those of you who get a DVD as part of your Kickstarter reward package should receive it in the mail any day now, if you haven't already. Thank you all for your patience and unwavering support. #Bridegroom #BridegroomMovie
