I've been blessed to work with some very esteemed and remarkable organizations over the past couple of years. Last year as my birthday approached, I thought I would do my best to give back to one. With the help of Crowdrise.com--a website that allows you to raise money for the charity of your choice--we amazingly collected over $3,000 for Love is Louder. I'd like to do the same thing again this year. My birthday is on Thursday, December 19, and I would love it if each one of you would do me the honor of contributing to my Crowdrise.com campaign benefiting The Trevor Project. Although BRIDEGROOM isn't officially available in many foreign countries right now, its story is spreading quickly throughout Asia. The film has been steadily shared on Torrent websites over the past few weeks, and I recently learned that Asian media outlets have been covering our documentary. I am blown away by all of the birthday love you've shown me throughout the week. Thank you so much for the wonderful birthday wishes and a very special thank you to everyone who donated to my birthday fundraiser benefitting the Trevor Project. Your generosity helped us not only to reach the goal of $3,000, but surpass it! We raised over $5,000 in under 24 hours. Your love and support never cease to amaze me. As a thank you, I will do my best to raise an additional $5,000 for the Trevor Project and all of the amazing work it does to help those in need. To top off what's already been an amazing birthday, my mom tweeted the sweetest message to me (yes my mom has a twitter. :) She signed up to support me) and New Mexico has become the 17th state to rule in favor of marriage equality! I didn't have the opportunity to get to know Tom's sister, nephew, or nieces until after he passed away. Having their love and support means the world to me, and although Tom is no longer here I will always consider his nieces and nephew as my own. Thank you to Brooke and Tom's family members who support me and BRIDEGROOM. I will never be able to adequately convey how much it means to have you in my life.
My dad hasn't always had the best of luck with timing. Ha ha. 12/19 Dad: Did you get your birthday card? I sent it a week ago. Me: I haven't checked my mailbox yet. Me: Nope, not here. 12/20 Dad: You get my card yet? Me: I'll check right now. Me: Thanks for the card dad... Dad: Oops. Dad: Dinner was good?
Many people have emailed or messaged me asking for my mailing address, so I decided to get a P.O. Box a week ago. Yesterday I went to the post office to retrieve my mail, and found a slip saying I needed to speak with the postal worker. There was so much mail that it didn't all fit in the box! Thank you so much for all of the birthday and Christmas cards and for reminding me how fortunate I am to have so much love and support. In these cards were some of the most moving stories I've ever heard: a parent who lost a child to suicide; a gentleman who to this day doesn't know where his partner is buried, but is determined to find him even after 15 years of searching; a young man in China who is afraid to death of coming out because he is positive his parents will disown him; and a gentleman in his 70s who shared that his parents forced him to receive shock therapy to "cure" his sexual orientation because they were convinced the devil was inside of him. Another young man in China messaged me and said that watching Bridegroom gave him hope that one day he will find love. He asked me to be a voice for him because he's too scared to be himself. All of these letters and cards remind me how fortunate I am to have an immediate family that loves me unconditionally. They also serve as a reminder that I must continue standing up for what I believe, in order to fight for those who feel powerless and voiceless. I know what it's like to be scared to live openly and honestly, and though I would never claim to represent the entire LGBT community, I will stand up for these people and anyone else who isn't ready to stand up for him or herself. Thinking of all of you this holiday season. Thank you for continuously blessing me with your love and support.
